Cirque de Gavarnie (Gavarnie)
The Cirque de Gavarnie, classified since 1997 as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in the Pyrenees-Mont Perdu ensemble, is a 6 km wide natural circus nestled in the Pyrenees National Park on the northern slope of the line of ridges marking the border with Spain. It is surrounded by peaks, often 3000 meters from east to west: the Petit Astazou, the Marboré peak, the Brulle peak, the Cascade peak, the Marboré shoulder, the Marboré tower and the Helmet du Marboré which is the highest point of the Cirque de Gavarnie at an altitude of 3248 meters. While the bottom of the circus, where the Hôtellerie is located, is around 1,570 meters. The height of the walls therefore reaches nearly 1,500 meters, in three successive floors separated by less inclined benches.
It is a must-see site in the Hautes-Pyrénées and one of the best departures for discovering the mountain on a hike in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park.
