The poet, novelist, playwright and critic Francis Jammes was born in Tournay on December 2, 1868. He spent most of his life in Béarn and the Basque Country, the main sources of his inspiration. He weaves many correspondences with his contemporaries such as Gide or Arthur Fontaine.
His work is more common abroad than in France. In particular with Rainer Maria Rilke who testifies to it in the first pages of the Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, with Ernst Stadler who translated his Fourteen prayers, with the editor Kurt Wolff who published an illustrated edition of his Roman du lièvre, with Kafka who in his Journal admits the happiness experienced in reading Jammes, with Ion Pillat who in addition to being his translator into Romanian pays homage to him in the poem Here Even Arrived Formerly. Almost all of his prose work has been translated and published by Jakob Hegner of Leipzig.
