Multiplying by 5

Do you know the story of the Five Little Monkeys?

What fun they had jumping on the bed!

What if there were more groups of 5 monkeys? π

That would make a lot of monkeys.

And it would have been such a mess! π

Let's multiply this:

4 x 5=?

You already know about **adding equal groups.**

π 4 groups of 5 is 20.

You also know about **repeated addition.**

5 + 5 + 5 + 5=20

But when multiplying by 5, learning from the **multiplication table **is the most helpful way.

π Here are some **numbers multiplied by 5:**

5 x 1 = 5

5 x 2 = 10

5 x 3 = 15

5 x 4 = 20

5 x 5 = 25

5 x 6 = 30

5 x 7 = 35

5 x 8 = 40

5 x 9 = 45

5 x 10 = 50

5 x 11 = 55

5 x 12 = 60

Another way to solve equations for multiplication by 5 is by **skip counting by 5.**

π Remember, 5 is one of the easiest numbers to skip count.Β

Let's say we need to multiply this:

5 x 6=?

π Skip count by 5, six times.

What answer did you get?

30! It's the same as in the multiplication table.

π Tip: Note that the skip counting list is the same as the answers in the multiplication table for 5.

Great job!

Why don't you try doing practice? πͺ
