Only one stage of the Tour de France passes through the Hautes-Pyrénées. But it's undoubtedly one of the highlights of this 2017 Tour de France, which Christian Prudhomme describes as "the longest stage of the Pyrenean journey, requiring a particularly demanding sequence. As the kilometers go by, the climb gets more challenging with the ascent of the Col de Menté before becoming ultra-selective in the climb of the Port de Balès, and then transforming into calf torture in the revisited finale of Peyragudes. In the final kilometer, on the track of the only altiport in the Pyrenees, there's a 200-meter section with a 16% gradient."

A stage that starts in Pau and passes through Tarbes before heading towards the Baronnies with an initial climb to Capvern, with a 7.7 km climb at 3.1%. But it's only after this that the Tour de France cyclists will tackle the toughest challenges, starting in Haute-Garonne with the Col d'Arès and its 7.4 km at a 4.6% gradient, the Col de Menté, classified as Category 1 at 1,349 meters after 6.9 km at 8.1%, the Port de Balès hors catégorie with 11.7 km at 7.7% to reach 1,755 meters, and in Hautes-Pyrénées with the Col de Peyresourde, classified as Category 1 at 1,595 meters with a 9.7 km climb at 7.8% and the finish at the Peyresoude altiport at the foot of the Peyragudes resort with a final 2.4 km at 8.4%. A great spectacle in store!

An event that will undoubtedly attract many spectators to the Tour's routes. The Hautes-Pyrénées prefecture will mobilize 350 gendarmes from the Hautes-Pyrénées gendarmerie group, 130 police officers, and 65 firefighters specifically dedicated to the event, with 30 stationed at rescue centers located along the race route and 35 positioned from the Peyresourde pass to the finish line in Peyragudes. Traffic in the department will obviously be disrupted, with numerous road closures along the route and even restrictions on the movement of planes and helicopters.
