Marcel Maréchal loves theater. He's a performer who never tires of taking his show on the road. This enthusiasm alone is a good reason to go see him, with the Tréteaux de France troupe, in Lannemezan, where they perform regularly. Last year they presented "La Très mirifique épopée Rabelais," a hilarious and irreverent play. This year they're back with "Falstaff's Stories," a new production based on the Shakespearean character who appears in Henry IV, Henry V, and The Merry Wives of Windsor. The flamboyant, corpulent, and irrepressible Sir John Falstaff is banished from the court of England by Prince Henry. He goes into exile, accompanied by Doll Tearsheet, a prostitute, and Bardolph, a young scoundrel. Their arrival in Windsor inevitably causes chaos. Falstaff decides to seduce Alice Ford, a young and wealthy bourgeois woman, both to steal her husband's money and to prove to himself that the fat, old Falstaff is not yet dead. A series of adventures ensues, reminiscent of Molière's "Don Juan," a blend of farce and drama. It captures the energy and humor of one, and the depth of the other. Marcel Maréchal opts for a simple text, perhaps even a little too simple, to make theater accessible to everyone. And indeed, the entire audience is swept up in the wild adventures of Sir John Falstaff. He attracts an audience that goes beyond the typical theater-goer. Even the high school students, who came as a group, stopped talking amongst themselves (or, more precisely, among themselves). The Tréteaux de France troupe demonstrates its effectiveness with contagious energy and enthusiasm. It's lively and generous theater that never fails to delight. Let's look forward to their next visit to Lannemezan... Don't miss it!
