The summer sales 2024 begin tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. online and at opening time for physical stores. With attractive discounts expected after unsettled weather during spring and a social climate that hasn't been conducive to sales. This is confirmed by the trend seen in pre-sale private sales and promotional offers since May. Should you shop for sales in physical stores or online? Here are some reasons why online shopping is preferable.
There is a wider selection online
The internet offers access to a multitude of online stores, providing a much wider range of products than any physical store. This allows you to compare prices and find the best deal. By browsing the stock of these numerous retailers, you have the best chance of finding that perfect item in your size. But be warned, you're not the only one shopping online, and items sell out faster than in physical stores.
No queues at the checkout or fitting rooms
Shopping online allows you to avoid queues, crowds, and the hustle and bustle of physical stores. You can browse virtually at your own pace, from the comfort of your home, and enjoy the sales without stress. And as we'll see later, the "no returns, no exchanges" policy doesn't apply online; you can order, try it on at home, and you have 14 days to return the product if it doesn't suit you.
It's easier to compare prices
The discounts offered during this period are often significant, allowing you to save money on items you've wanted for a long time. But two tools can help you check if the same product isn't even cheaper elsewhere: image search, like Google Lens. Right-click on a product image and select "search image with Google" to access other stores that offer the same product. Then all you have to do is find the cheapest one. Then there are price comparison websites like Idealo, which also allow you to find the store offering the best price for a product.
Double regulation, double consumer protection
The sales period is clearly defined by regulations, whether for in-store or online shopping. However, online sales are also subject to regulations on distance selling, which offer particular protection to consumers. While "no returns, no exchanges" signs are common in physical stores, online retailers cannot use this policy. The law stipulates that online store customers must have a right of withdrawal. This gives the consumer the opportunity to change their mind about their purchase, which can be exercised before or within 14 days after delivery. This right does not apply to certain specific products defined by Article L221-28, which includes, for example, highly personalized items, food, or items that have been unsealed by the consumer after delivery and cannot be returned for hygiene or health reasons. Except in these specific cases, the "no returns, no exchanges" policy cannot apply to online sales, as the customer must be able to exchange the item or receive a refund, without penalty and without having to justify their decision.
Clothing: standard items are cheaper and high-end items more affordable
The winter sales are a great opportunity to invest in quality, essential items at reduced prices to stay warm throughout the winter season, from coats and sweaters to scarves and boots. Winter items are often heavily discounted during the sales, with great deals available now. Don't forget about sports equipment if you've made any fitness resolutions for the new year. Private sales set the tone with discounts of up to 70% on spring/summer collections, from brands like Asos, Spartoo, Benetton and Gant. But the sales are also a great opportunity to treat yourself or buy gifts from brands that are usually less affordable, such as Guess, Stella McCartney or Zadig & Voltaire. Whether you're looking for a summer dress, a trendy swimsuit or children's clothing, the sales offer a wide variety of choices. And with the second and third price reductions, prices drop even further, even if the selection becomes smaller.
