The resort was founded in 2003 when the two oldest resorts in the Pyrenees, Pas-de-la-Case / Grau Roig / Encamp (founded in 1956) and Soldeu / El Tarter / Canillo (founded in 1964), were merged. This union has enabled the creation of the largest resort in the Pyrenees and one of the largest in Europe, with its 210 kilometers of slopes, a total of 128 slopes for all levels and a single package giving access to all ski area. It is during the season which begins in 2019 that the new Peretol sector is created, uniting with the rest of the domain. The number of pistes is also increased to 138. During these years of history, Grandvalira has made an immense economic effort, investing more than 100 million euros basically to expand the ski area, renovate and increase the network of ski lifts (the resort can now accommodate more than 100 000 skiers per hour, which implies the disappearance of long queues to access the lifts), improve the network of snow cannons (more than 65% of the territory is snow-covered in artificial form for the greatest happiness of the skiers) and to provide the resort with the most complete network of après-ski activities. In this way, the bet taken in favor of constant innovation has borne fruit and allowed the resort to host world-renowned events, such as the Women's Ski World Cup in 2012, or the Cup events. of the world of speed in 2012 and 2013, which made Grandvalira an international benchmark of quality.
