Parc National des Pyrénées
The Pyrenees National Park is one of the 7 sites in France placed under this status. By protecting exceptional natural sites, it allows you to discover a unique wealth of flora and fauna.
It stretches over a hundred kilometers, from the peak of Laristie in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, to the peak of Néouvielle in the Hautes-Pyrénées, crossing 6 valleys:
The Aspe Valley and its vast forests, the bear's last bastion
the neighboring Ossau valley, a hotspot for pastoralism
the val d'Azun or valley of Arrens dominated by the Balaïtous (3144m)
the Cauterets valley, the scene of spectacular waterfalls
the Luz-Gavarnie valley and its world famous circuses
the Aure valley and the Néouvielle Nature Reserve, the most easterly, with the highest hook pine forests in Europe.
The Pyrenees National Park is divided into two zones:
- the central area of 450 km², almost uninhabited, subject to enhanced protection. This is where the most spectacular landscapes are concentrated.
- The peripheral zone of 2060 km², a sort of "pre-park" on the edge of the central zone. It has 86 municipalities and 40,000 inhabitants.
