Interview SiViS - Le Celtic (Tarbes)

Sivis returns to the Celtic Pub

No vacation for Jean-Louis Abbadie. While other venues take a break for the All Saints' Day holiday, the Celtic Pub remains open, much to the delight of those staying in Tarbes! On Monday, they treated us to the haunting rock of Gil Rose & the Hydropaths. The rest of the program follows suit, ranging from the cabaret songs of Bastoon & Babouschka to the metal of Sivis, whose Yannick we interviewed.

You're announcing "Death trash core." That's a lot, isn't it?

A little, yes. It's actually the sum of the band's various influences, even if the core aspect is more of an early part of the band that we're still carrying around like a ball and chain. Now it's more thrash with its fast and brutal side, and death metal for the melodic side. A style we really like for the energy it gives off!

Do the lyrics still find their place in this onslaught of decibels?

Yes, Thomas, the singer, does a great job of placing his voice in relation to the music to develop his lyrics. The lyrics are rather abstract, inspired by everyday events or things that annoy him, or sometimes just a crazy idea like "Over Wolf"!

With the release of five tracks from "What Makes You Scream" last February,

what's been happening with Sivis?

We haven't been very involved with Sivis. The band has been on hiatus since last May. Alex and I have been focusing more on Fretswing [a gypsy jazz group - Ed.] since then. There have been a lot of discussions about where we wanted to go with Sivis, and there have been some soul-searching. So, we haven't really been able to capitalize on that album... Now Sivis is starting up again. We've made a few changes; I've switched to bass, and Alex has moved to guitar. It's giving the band a new lease on life. Saturday's concert at the Celtic will be the first of this revival!

And your projects?

We're working on a new album for next April. We've made good progress on it; we just have five or six tracks left to finish. And then we'll start touring again. We already have dates booked for Bordeaux, at La Dynamo, a new venue in Toulouse. We're also going to Paris, touring in Belgium, and returning to Brittany. We're looking for a manager and a booking agent!

With the announced closure of the Celtic Pub, it's a blow to the Tarbes music scene in the Hautes-Pyrénées region and beyond. And to the public, who've grown up on the most eclectic of programs.
