The Ballet de Biarritz, under the direction of Thierry Malandain, presented a truly beautiful performance to the people of Tarbes on Thursday and Friday evenings. With "The Seasons," they placed dance at the heart of the encounter between two "four seasons": those of Antonio Vivaldi and those of Giovanni Antonio Guido. This danced encounter was structured like a mille-feuille pastry, alternating between the cream of Vivaldi's universally known melodies and the more resilient puff pastry of Giovanni Antonio Guido's Four Seasons, which we are discovering for the first time. The performance alternated between large-scale scenes, danced collectively by the twenty or so dancers on the Parvis stage, and more intimate duets and quartets. It alternated between the exuberance that bursts forth in one scene and the restraint of another. All of this was brilliantly delivered by a ballet that demonstrated a remarkable technical mastery of its art and an expressiveness that gave the performance real substance. And layer by layer, the mille-feuille takes shape, and the whole thing surpasses the sum of its parts. A real treat! Just over an hour of entertainment to savor from beginning to end. A truly wonderful way to start the season at Le Parvis.
