Until the 14th century, the Saas valley had only one municipality: Saas. Of the four villages that were subsequently created, Saas-Fee, also known as "Pearl of the Alps" is the best known. 13 peaks over 4000 meters surround this glacier village, located at an altitude of 1800 meters. The "pearl of the Alps" sits on a high plateau in the Saas valley, dominating the three other municipalities in the region. Situated in the center of the valley, Saas-Grund is an ideal starting point for high altitude hikes. The main attraction of Saas-Almagell is the Mattmark natural dam. The sights of Saas-Balen are a circular church from the end of the Baroque period, a monument of national importance, as well as the Fellbach Falls in the middle of the village. The Saas Valley is known for its 350 kilometers of thematic paths and hiking routes as well as its special offers for families and children. The ski area has 150 kilometers of slopes of all levels of difficulty, generally very well snow-covered. They are served by 22 ski lifts, including the famous Metro Alpin, which leads to the highest revolving restaurant in the world. With its 22 ski lifts and 100 km of prepared slopes, the Saas-Fee winter sports area is the heart of the entire ski region. Another ski area can be found in the near Kreuzboden-Hochsaas region above Saas-Grund. And if you don't practice downhill skiing, you will have 20 km of winter hiking trails and an 8 km cross-country ski trail available. Several toboggan runs, such as the 11 km one between Kreuzboden and Saas-Grund, allow you to vary the pleasures.
